The Cursed Seal

Forbidden Rank

Every player carries one. Right after Setup ends, each of you draws a single permanent face-down card, and its rank becomes something you'll be working around for the rest of the match.

RULES

Once both players finish Setup, each draws one card face-down as their Cursed Seal. Its rank becomes that player's personal Forbidden Rank for the remainder of the match — this is set once and never changes.

Cards matching your own Forbidden Rank cannot count toward a Straight or a Flush for you specifically, in any Siege. They still count completely normally toward pairs, Three of a Kinds, Four of a Kinds, and Full Houses.

Your Forbidden Rank also permanently disables that rank's signature ability for you: if it lands on 4, The Scout's search is disabled; if it lands on Ace, Ace Search (and the Ace-King) is disabled. The one action that still works regardless is Hand Refresh — playing your Cursed Seal card itself to shuffle your entire hand back into the Archives and redraw the same number of cards.

The Cursed Seal also plays a role in The Crimson Judgment: if the match reaches that sudden-death round, one player's 5-card hand is guaranteed to include a card of the Forbidden Rank (the Cursed Seal), while the other's includes the Flower Card instead.

LORE OF THE COURT

Every deck carries it. No one chose it to be there — it simply arrived one day, early in whatever kingdom this once was, and refused to leave with the rest of the discarded things.

It knows the Flower Card by name, the two of them bound together in a way the Court has never fully explained, only ever recorded the outcome of.

You felt it settle into your hand like it had been waiting specifically for you. It has worn many hands before yours. It will wear many more after — that is the only promise it has ever kept.

STRATEGY

When to play it

You don't choose your Forbidden Rank, but you learn it immediately after Setup — plan your Siege hands around it from that point on rather than discovering the restriction mid-combat. If it lands on a rank you were relying on for a Straight or Flush, pivot toward pair-based hands instead, since those are untouched.

Counters

Hand Refresh is your only remaining lever once a key rank is sealed — use it deliberately when your hand has become too dependent on the disabled rank's search ability rather than holding onto it out of habit.

Synergies

Directly paired with The Flower Card during The Crimson Judgment — whichever player doesn't receive the Flower Card in that final deal receives a card of their Forbidden Rank instead.
